Since 2013, Protect Me Albania has transformed animal welfare in Vlorë, independently serving 500 animals annually through no-kill shelter and CNVR programs, advocating for policy change and facilitating adoptions.

Welcome to Our Animal Shelter

We warmly welcome visitors during our regular operating hours and are grateful for your interest in our rescued animals.

Visiting Hours & Guidelines

Operating Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Entry Procedure: All visitors must enter through the small GREEN door at the shelter compound main gate off the street and wait in the secure area until contacted by a staff member.

Optimal Visiting Times

Morning (9:00 AM - 1:00 PM): Kennel maintenance period Afternoon (After 1:00 PM): Recommended visiting time when animal care is complete and our most socialized animals are available for interaction

Important Safety Information

Our animals are primarily rescued street strays, many of whom have experienced trauma and may have temperament challenges. While we take every precaution to ensure visitor safety, we strongly recommend scheduling casual visits after 1:00 PM when animals have been returned to their kennels.

Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times for their safety.

Essential Items for Animal Shelter Volunteers

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Closed-toe shoes with good tread - Non-slip soles are crucial for wet kennel floors

  • Work gloves - Leather or heavy-duty rubber for handling animals and cleaning

  • Aprons or old clothes - Expect to get dirty, wet, and possibly scratched

  • Long pants - Protect legs from scratches, bites, and cleaning chemicals

  • Hair ties - Keep long hair secured away from animals and equipment

Health & Safety Essentials

  • Hand sanitizer - Use between animal interactions

  • First aid supplies - Basic bandages, antiseptic wipes for minor scratches

  • Allergy medication - If you have known animal allergies

  • Face masks - For dusty areas or if you're feeling unwell

  • Sunscreen - For outdoor activities like dog walks

Practical Comfort Items

  • Water bottle - Stay hydrated during physical work

  • Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks - Your feet will thank you

  • Tissues or handkerchief - Animals can be emotional triggers

  • Small towel - For drying hands or cleaning up spills

  • Change of clothes (keep in car) - In case of major accidents

  • Poop bags - Always carry extras

  • Small flashlight or phone light - Useful for checking kennel corners

  • Notebook and pen - Record animal behaviors or concerns

  • Lip balm - Kennels can be dry environments

  • Lotion - Frequent hand washing is tough on skin

  • Deodorant - Physical work in close quarters

  • Mints or gum - Maintain fresh breath around adopters

Emergency Preparedness

  • Emergency contact information - Keep shelter and personal emergency numbers handy

  • Insurance cards - Health and auto insurance

  • Small cash fund - For emergency needs

  • Fully charged phone - Communication and emergency access

Seasonal Considerations

Summer: Extra water, cooling towels, hat for outdoor work Winter: Warm layers, waterproof boots, hand warmers Rainy season: Rain jacket, extra socks, waterproof phone case

What NOT to Bring

  • Open-toed shoes or sandals

  • Expensive jewelry or watches

  • Strong perfumes or scents (can stress animals)

  • Your own pets (without prior approval)

  • Outside food for animals (unless approved)

Remember: Every shelter has specific policies about what volunteers can bring and use. Check with staff before your first shift about any restrictions or additional requirements. Your safety and the animals' wellbeing are the top priorities.
